Industry Roundtable Addresses Challenges and Solutions to Welding Workforce Needs

         Weld-Ed and the American Welding Society present a free daylong industry roundtable discussion on September 9th designed to explore solutions to the challenges of recruiting, educating and retaining a skilled welding industry workforce.

         The "State of the Welding Industry Workforce Roundtable" session, scheduled for 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza O'Hare Hotel in Chicago, will include key industry, education and government experts concerned with the future and vitality of the welding and materials joining industry.

         The goal of the event is to develop recommendations and drive action that will expand and improve programs designed to produce tomorrow's welding industry workforce.  The session is open to the public and will be webcast live.

Dialog at the roundtable will pertain to cultivating a growing pool of skilled welding technicians to fit specialized fields in a variety of domestic industries deemed vital to the U.S. infrastructure.  Those topics will address:

  •   Challenges faced by employers in recruiting, training, and retaining welders and other welding professionals;
  • Challenges faced by educators in recruiting, educating, and retaining students in welding related programs;
  • Organizational impacts from new technologies, advancements in welding, and globalization; and
  •  Creative solutions and partnerships to educate and hire the right people.

         An afternoon working session is also planned as part of a "take action" portion of the event.  Armed with ideas, recommendations and solutions derived from the morning roundtable, participants will work to develop frameworks for pilot projects that will involve cooperation, commitment and participation by the various organizations attending the session.

         Based on the feedback and action plans developed at the session, a final report will be issued by the American Welding Society with recommendations for the industry, education and government sectors.
